The Rural Child dashboards, developed by Tekja for Save the Children US, uses rich socio-economic data collected by Columbia University to reveal key aspects of life in rural America. Amongst the rich and wide data variables the dashboard contains, it explores areas of poverty, educational attainment as well as family and community connection.
Working in close partnership with Save the Children U.S. Programs and researchers from Columbia University, we led the full strategic and technical delivery – from data architecture and UX/UI design to bespoke interactive development. Our role was to translate complex, multi-source datasets into a clear, navigable interface that supports both high-level storytelling and deep analytical exploration. The platform exceeded projected engagement targets, attracted high-level visibility from U.S. government officials and Members of Congress, and is now used as an evidence base for programme planning and advocacy.
A key feature of the design concept is clear comparison between rural and urban areas, highlighting states with the largest disparity and the greatest need. By enabling comparison of key indicators state by state and ranked country-wide, policy makers are able to identify outliers and areas of low and high performance.
The dashboards were developed with a focus on sustainability and scalability. The application is build in next.js using d3.js leveraging powerful data transitions to emphasis key stories and enhance the user experience and SEO.
New updates are forthcoming in 2025.
